FSC Saves Forest by Cutting Down Trees?

According to the USDA Forest Service, approximately 60% of the forests in the United States are privately held. Do you know what usually happens when a landowner cannot profit from his investment? He sells it. And it’s usually not to someone who wants to take over an unprofitable forest and try to make a go of it. Many times, it’s a developer who is planning to turn a working forest into the next golf course, housing development, or shopping center. FSC works to keep forests economically viable by making sure that:

  • FSC-certified forest operations are structured and managed to be sufficiently profitable to avoid alternative development
  • Profit does not come at the expense of the forest resources, the ecosystem, or the affected communities
  • Trees that are cut down to make FSC-certified paper do not harm the forest or the environment
  • FSC harvested trees are part of an overall plan to keep a forest healthy and safe

FSC saves forests by working with land owners, not against them. It’s the perfect model for preserving our forests and a great reason for you to buy FSC products.

Top 10 Reasons to Become FSC Certified

When considering whether to become FSC certified, as you would expect, printers have a lot of questions. The number one and two questions are, “Why should I become FSC certified?” and “What are the benefits?”.  Here are my answers in the form of a top 10 list. There are many more, but these are the most important in my book. Feel free to add your opinion on additional benefits.

  1. Just Do the Right Thing Regardless of the Reward. FSC gives an assurance that future generations will be able to enjoy the benefits of the forest. Need we say more?
  2. Your Customers Prefer Green. According to the inaugural BBMG Conscious Consumer Report, nearly nine in ten Americans say the words “conscious consumer” describe them well and are more likely to buy from companies that manufacture energy efficient products (90%), promote health and safety benefits (88%), support fair labor and trade practices (87%) and commit to environmentally-friendly
practices (87%), if products are of equal quality and price.
  3. ROI…It’s in There Somewhere. You probably will not be able to track all the orders you win or save because you are FSC certified, but you will most likely retain existing business and get some new orders because of your FSC certification status. All you need to do is get the word through your web site and marketing materials. The more you sell and promote FSC certified products, the better the results.
  4. You Will Be Very Cool.  An FSC certificate label is an effective way to get public and consumer recognition of your responsible practices. This gives you street cred(ibility) with customers and business partners, as well as financial institutions and watchdog
organizations. Everyone will think you are the coolest printer on the block.
  5. Play Both Offense and Defense.  FSC certification helps to protect your brand and reputation and it allows you to
access and service highly environmentally sensitive customers. Increasingly, buyers specify FSC certified products.
  6. Public Trust. Being FSC certified shows that you comply with the highest social and environmental standards on the market. As public concerns about the paper use and the state of the world’s forests and timber resources increases, FSC provides you with a credible solution to complex environmental and social issues.
  7. End Greenwashing. Many printers claim they are using sustainable paper, but do they really know where and how their paper was made? FSC Chain of Custody certification tracks the FSC certified material through the production processes all the way to the end user. No smoke and mirrors used here. FSC is the real deal.
  8. FSC Carries No Baggage. FSC is the only wood certification scheme endorsed by the major environmental charities, including WWF, Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust.
  9. You Are Not Married to FSC. FSC has an extremely high retention rate for certified printers. This is because they get to see the value of FSC firsthand. However, there is no stigma attached if you want to leave the program. You simply decline your annual renewal and we’ll still be friends.
  10. Try It, You’ll Like It. You can become FSC certified for the all-inclusive fee of $1895 through the InGreen Program offered by Printers Green Resource LLC. The marketing benefits alone are worth more than that. Once certified, you have a full year to kick the tires and see if FSC certification is right for you. That’s not a lot to invest to have access to the most trusted and recognized paper certification
    program in the world.

Is FSC Certification Right for You?

Without a major overhaul or budget implications, your college or university print shop may not be able to easily change vendors, turnaround times or print quality. But, one buying factor you can control is your environmental impact.

For in-plant print shops looking to increase their credibility as sustainable providers and boost their competitive advantage, there may be no better way than Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. With recent polls showing consumers will choose products they deem more environmentally friendly 86 percent of the time if prices are close and sustainable practices becoming a major focus at colleges and universities, environmental impact continues to play a key factor in purchasing decisions.

As one of the premier environmental certification programs, FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as provide ongoing business value.

In addition to the environmental aspects of FSC certification, there are tremendous marketing and competitive advantages to being FSC certified. Many customers are now demanding FSC certified products or declaring a preference for them, giving the upper hand to FSC certified printers. FSC certification can also build status internally with your shop’s parent organization, as they must consider the demands of employees, students and other constituents for sustainable programs and environmental stewardship. Bottom line, FSC puts some pretty effective bullets in the print shop’s sales and marketing gun.

Despite these benefits, many shops have been sitting on the FSC sidelines due to the high cost of individual certification. To alleviate this situation, FSC has made group certification available to select printers. This not only reduces the cost of becoming FSC certified, it makes complying with FSC administrative and training requirements much easier.

However, the in-plant printshop market remains vastly underrepresented in FSC certification. Recognizing this gap, Printers Green Resource LLC has introduced its InGreen program to assist in-plant operations with becoming FSC certified. As a result, the in-plant printer gets a vastly reduced rate for their FSC certification and the benefit of having many of the required administrative duties performed by the program.

For more information on the program, call Rick Huntoon of Printers Green Resource LLC at 214-228-1448 or email him at rickh@ingreenprinter.com.
